While there are plenty of historically significant locations across the United States, perhaps none is more immersive and interactive as the meticulously preserved streets of Colonial Williamsburg. Whether a history buff has been there dozens of times or a young student is planning the very first tour of this site, there are a few tips and tricks that can help anyone schedule a memorable outing.

Where to Go

Whether a traveler will be spending a week in the area or is just stopping by for a day, the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area is a must-see attraction. This section of town is set up much like it would have been during the days of America’s founding and consists of various shops, restaurants, and other spots that maintain historical accuracy while ensuring modern visitors can enjoy it all in comfort.

The Governor’s Palace is an awe-inspiring structure that served as the residence for governors during the colonial period as well as after Virginia became a state. Adjacent gardens bring a beautiful natural element into the visit, making it a feast for the senses. The Capitol Building is another culturally and historically significant destination in this area. Although previous incarnations were destroyed, this replica was built to represent what it actually looked like and several original artifacts that survived are still on display. Among the other important buildings in the area are Charlton’s Coffeehouse, which features a virtual conversation with George Washington, and Peyton Randolph House, where visitors can experience what life was like for colonists and slaves during this period of history. There are many other unique attractions, but some require a ticket, so be prepared to spend a little money to gain full access.

What to Wear

Even though the historical area is relatively compact and shuttles can carry visitors from one place to the next, there will likely be a significant amount of walking for many visitors. For that reason, it is important to bring some sensible, comfortable shoes that will provide plenty of support. A quick check of the weather will provide some insight about whether to bring a jacket, but the temperature is generally moderate through most of the year.
