About Anna Maria Mulè

Anna Maria Mulè is a lifelong learner and educator who currently serves the Department of Education of New York as a New Principal Support Fellow. She has developed a passion for other cultures which she feeds through travel and world-exploration.

Her interest in travel has driven her professional career as well, throughout her prioritization of the success of English Second Language and English Language Learner students. As she has taught these students, she has developed more and more of an interest in travel.

As a New Principal Support Fellow, she aids new principals with their difficult transition into a role that Anna Maria Mulè has proven success in. Her support involves guiding new principals in their professional development, network building, and educational management strategies. She is in this position as a result of nearly two decades of experience in education, experience which she continues to build upon and refine.
This experience began in 1993, when Anna Maria Mulè began her own college education, seeking a dual major in history and education. She graduated with these degrees in 1997 from Iona College and immediately continued on to pursue her masters in History and Secondary Education from Queens College. Right out of her undergraduate studies, she joined the Newtown High School to teach Social Studies. She built a deep repertoire of topics, including history, civics, and economics. During this time, she discovered an interest in English Language Learners, and also started as an ESL and Civics Teacher at the Queens Adult Learning Center. Here she found a passion for the culture and languages of those she was educating. She continued to teach at the center until 2008.

She finished earning her first masters in 2001, and she immediately pursued her second, this time in Education Administration. 2003 when she earned her Masters in Education Administration from the College of New Rochelle. After earning this degree, she began to look for ways to utilize this degree for the betterment of the education system. In 2005, she began to work with the 7th Grade Saturday Preparatory Academy as well as the Region 4 Learning Support Center. At these two sites, she helped with staff development, analyze their assessments, and guided on how to use this data to inform strategies.

Her special interest in ELL guided her to enter the position of ELL Curriculum Specialist with the DOE Office of ELL in New York. She liaison with more than 70 schools in order to develop ELL best practices. She brought her experience and expertise with her to workshops where she guided administrators and teachers towards how to better provide foundations of academic vocabulary for learners. In addition, she built her network with conferences, serving on task forces, and through her liaisons.

Her work as a Curriculum Specialist brought Anna Maria Mulè to her most successful position as Principal of the Cobble Hill School of American Studies in Brooklyn, NY. Here, she effectively revitalized the school, improving the graduation rate from 56% in 2011to 72% in 2012, and achieving an 89% graduation rate by 2018. The attendance rate increased to 85%. Anna Maria’s School Turnaround/Transformation initiative resulted in stellar changes in the school culture and outcome, resulting in the school being removed from the Schools in Need of Improvement list by 2014. Anna Maria left her position as Principal in 2019, leaving the school in a much better position than she had found it in.

Now, as Principal Support Coaching Fellow, Anna Maria Mulè Supports nearly a dozen principals around the state of New York. She ensures competency in Professional Standards for Educational Leaders, and even provides guidance on more specific ideas, such as active listening. At all levels, she ensures that equity is a priority in her educational guidance.
